EXPLANATORY MEMO: MODEL GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
The model Procedure proposes a quick 2 stage process for dealing with grievances
The first stage involves the aggrieved employee raising the grievance verbally with an immediate superior who attempts to resolve the problem. This stage may be bypassed in appropriate circumstances e.g. an employee grieving about sexual harassment by that superior.
If the immediate superior is unable to resolve the grievance within a short period, the aggrieved employee fills in a grievance form, which also records the superior's comments, and the matter is referred to a more senior manager.
The more senior manager attempts to resolve the grievance through a variety of options. If this is not successful within a short period, the employee may then utilise the dispute procedures in the Labour Relations Act or other applicable legislation.
